The group stage is done, 32 teams are left, and the World Cup turns into a straight knockout — win or go home. This is where bracket challenges come alive. But 2026 changed the maths, so let's get the format straight first.
How the new Round of 32 works
For the first time, there's a Round of 32 before the usual Round of 16:
- The top two from each of the 12 groups advance (24 teams), plus the eight best third-place teams — that's 32.
- Those 32 play a single-elimination bracket: Round of 32 → Round of 16 → Quarter-finals → Semi-finals → Final.
- One bad night and you're out. No second legs, no aggregate — just nerves.
The Round of 32 runs June 28 – July 3, and it builds to the final on July 19 at MetLife Stadium.
Run a bracket challenge your friends will finish
A knockout bracket is the most satisfying format because it's all or nothing — and everyone can fill one out, even people who skipped the group stage.
- Everyone fills in the full bracket before the Round of 32 kicks off — pick every winner all the way to the trophy.
- Score it as you go: points per correct pick, more points the deeper the round (a correct finalist is worth more than a Round-of-32 call).
- Equal stake, locked early. Brackets in before the first knockout whistle — no edits once it starts.
- Let the group settle it. Closest bracket takes the pot; nail the champion for a bonus.
The hard part is never the picking — it's the scoring and the paying. So don't do it by hand: run the whole thing in one place with an equal stake that the winner claims when the final whistle blows.
Whoever busts their bracket first? Give them a forfeit.
